Masei

  View Printable Version
JDL ParshasThis week's Torah Parsha is Masei: "These are the journeys of the children of Israel, who went forth from the land of Egypt according to their legions, under the hand of Moshe and Aaron." (Bamidbar/Numbers 33:1)

The beginning of the portion details the entire 40-year journey traveled by the nation, from their departure from Egypt until their encampment across the Jordan River, prepared to enter the land of Israel. As the Torah contains no extraneous letters, no less extra words, why was it deemed necessary to recall all these locations, each already explained in detail in the previous sections of the Torah?

Rabbi Obadiah Sforno expounds that G-d recorded all the stages of the travel to teach us the devotion of our forebears who followed Him in the terrible wilderness. It was that devotion that earned them entry into the land of Israel. The Torah reports numerous weaknesses and faults of the Jewish nation -- they denied the benefits they had received, often declaring they would prefer to live in Egypt, they slandered the Promised Land and Moshe, and they provoked quarrels. Now, the Torah describes another side of Israel, revealing the national trust in the Divine, following G-d in the harsh wilderness despite the challenges. . . .

Tisha B'Av

  View Printable Version
JDL Parshas"A nation that mourns for its temple for more than 1700 years deserves to see it rebuilt" -- Napoleon Bonaparte to the Jews of France after inquiring about their practice of mourning on the 9th of Av.

We are in a period of time called "The Three Weeks." It is the period of time between the 17th of Tamuz and the 9th of Av. It is a period of sadness, deep thinking and yearning for the redemption of Israel and the Jewish People.

"Five things happened to our ancestors on the 17th of Tamuz and five things happened on the 9th of Av. On the 17th of Tamuz the Tablets were broken, the daily offering ceased, the walls of Jerusalem were breached and Apostomos burned the Torah and erected an idol in the Temple, and on the 9th of Av, it was decreed that our ancestors would not enter the Land, the First and Second Temples were destroyed, and Beitar was conquered and Jerusalem was plowed" (Ta’anit 26a).

All who eat and drink on the 9th of Av will not see the rejoicing of Jerusalem and all who mourn for Jerusalem will merit to see her joy. . .(Shulchan Aruch- Orach Chaim 554:25).

Pinchas

  View Printable Version
JDL ParshasThis week's Torah Parsha is Pinchas. There is a very clear lesson to be learned in this parsha regarding Jewish Leadership.

When Pinchas saw a prince from the tribe of Shimon publicly involved in a sexual manner with a Midianite princess, he took the law into his own hands. Using his spear, Pinchas killed them both. God praised his act of zealotry, rewarding him with the priesthood.

"Pinchas, the son of Elazar the son of Aaron the Kohen, was the one who zealously took up My cause among the Israelites and turned my anger away from them" (Bamidbar/Numbers 25:11).

Why does the Torah need to point out Pinchas' lineage here? This is particularly puzzling, considering that the Torah just identified Pinchas three verses earlier. . . .

"You Are One Ugly Mother- [Edited for Television]"

The Sonny Landham era -- what heaven it was -- may be coming to an end. Kentucky Libertarians, understandably displeased at becoming a bunch of laughing stocks, are trying to end the Predator actor's candidacy for Senate.

In a nine-to-nothing vote, the party decided to withdraw its support of Landham. This means the party will not have a candidate in the November election. Last week, Landham publicly remarked that Arabs should not be allowed to travel to the United States. He said Arabs should not be in America's schools, and he said the United States should have bombed Saudi Arabia, Syria, and other Arab nations.

Here's what Landham said. A highlight:

Todd Barnett [Boston Tea Party Vice Chair]: Where I disagree, Sonny, is the language that you use. Um–

Sonny Landham: What language is that, sir?

Todd Barnett [Boston Tea Party Vice Chair]: Well you refer to Arabs, all Arabs as camel dung-shovelers, sir. And you --

Sonny Landham: Well would you prefer that I use rag-heads or camel jockeys?

The bad news is that Kentucky's Secretary of State (a Republican) isn't letting the Libertarian Party off. Now the choices are either: (1) the party can submit its petition in early August and have Landham listed as a Libertarian; (2) the party can submit its petition in the middle of August, which will mean that the petition will only be valid for president and vice-president, but not U.S. Senator (the deadline for the presidential and vice-presidential candidate is in early September, but the deadline for all other office is in early August). In that case Landham won’t be on the ballot at all.

It's tragic. Predator actors who want to go into politics should wait until after they're elected to start howling at the moon.

Attacking a Jewish girl and the friends who came to her rescue has landed a Muslim man a one-year jail sentence. Mustafa Taj must also serve a year of probation following his release for what provincial court Judge Bill Cummings ruled was a racially motivated assault.

"In this case, I'm satisfied that imprisonment is necessary," Cummings said in accepting the Crown's bid for a jail term. Prosecutors Ken McCaffrey and Inayat Jetha had sought a sentence of up to two years for the hate crime.

Taj, 21, was convicted in May of attacking four teenagers the night of Nov. 3, 2006, while they waited for a C-Train at the Sunnyside LRT station.

Taj approached the group around 10:45 p.m. and asked "who's Jewish." Nichola Cordato, then 16, stated "me" and Taj grabbed her and said, "I'm Muslim and hate Jews." He then slapped her in the face and pulled her hair before her friends, Jessica Motta, Kayla Hungle and Daniel Ball attempted to intervene.

Hungle attempted to prevent Taj from further attacking Cordato and was punched in the face by him. Motta then intervened and was punched in the face, pulled to the ground by her hair and kicked in the stomach and ribs. When Ball tried to stop the assaults, he was thrown onto the C-Train tracks where he fell onto his back and was spat upon by Taj.

During the melee, Taj called Cordato a "Jewish piece of (crap).". . .

Eyewitness Account of Second Bulldozer Terrorist Attack by Shmuel Sackett

  View Printable Version
News to KnowToday at 1:57 pm, I parked my car about 200 feet from the King David Hotel. I got out of the car, as did my wife, Rhonda, and Moshe Feiglin. We were headed to a lunch meeting with Ben Landa, Chairman of the Board of Manhigut Yehudit, who had arrived a few hours earlier and was staying in the King David. We started walking when – about 10 FEET IN FRONT OF US (no exaggeration) – we saw a large bulldozer drop his huge shovel in an attempt to crush a woman crossing the street. Baruch Hashem, she managed to miss it by a few inches!

The bulldozer then raced into the middle of King David Street in an attempt to smash into a passing Egged bus. The driver quickly swerved out of the way, yet the bulldozer managed to smash into the back rear part of the bus on the “passenger” side. The bus smashed into some guard rails but quickly turned down a side street (by the Dan Panorama Hotel) to avoid any further attacks by the bulldozer. (Note: That bus driver was an AMAZINGLY quick thinker and saved MANY lives!!) . . .

Man guilty in false imprisonment of Elie Wiesel

  View Printable Version
News to KnowA San Francisco jury convicted a 24-year-old man on misdemeanour charges on Monday for pulling Elie Wiesel from a hotel elevator in an incident the Holocaust survivor, author and Nobel Peace Prize recipient thought was a kidnapping attempt.

The jury found Eric Hunt guilty of misdemeanour false imprisonment with a hate crime allegation, battery and elder abuse for yanking the 79-year-old Wiesel from a hotel elevator in February 2007, said defence lawyer John Runfola.

Runfola said the jury found Hunt not guilty on felony charges of attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment and stalking. Wiesel was not hurt in the incident.

Wiesel, well known for his memoir on the Holocaust, was 15 years old when his Jewish family was deported by the Nazis to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He lost his parents and younger sister in the Holocaust.

Hunt had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity after being extradited to San Francisco from a New Jersey mental institution, Runfola said.

"He's been given medication and now he's restored," Runfola said, noting Hunt has a sentencing hearing August 13 and faces up to three years in prison.

Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for writing and speaking out against violence, repression and racism.
